William Dean Howells c. 1908

William Dean Howells was an author, editor, and critic. He was the editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1871 - 1881. Referred to as the "Dean of American Letters," he was elected the first president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1908. Howells corresponded with Darrow and in 1904 tried to help Darrow get a manuscript called "Story of My Life" published. The book was eventually published with the title "Farmington."
