John Haynes Holmes

Clarence Darrow debated his friend Dr. John Haynes Holmes, pastor of the Community Church in New York on December 23, 1924. The debated was titled Resolved: That the United States Continue the Policy of Prohibition as Defined in the Eighteenth Amendment. At one point during his presentation Darrow remarked:

"Take out of this world the men who have drunk, down through the past, and you would take away all the poetry and literature and practically all the works of genius that the world has produced. What kind of poem do you suppose you would get out of a glass of ice-water?"
