H. L. Mencken

Mencken was editor of the American Mercury and covered the trial for the Baltimore Sun. Mencken wrote scathing attacks against the South and religion. When William Jennings Bryan died five days after the Scopes trial, Mencken privately declared, "We killed the son of a bitch." But publicly he said that God had thrown a thunderbolt down to kill Clarence Darrow but missed and hit Bryan instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:H_l_mencken.jpg
