John Philip Sousa at Chautauqua c. 1925

Chautauqua was an adult education movement in the United States. The lecture series was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Clarence Darrow began giving speeches at Chautauqua meetings starting around 1914. Darrow was a good draw and he would come to rely on Chautauqua lecture fees in the years to come.
