In 1896 Governor John Peter Altgeld was running for re-election and he persuaded a reluctant Clarence Darrow to run for Congress. William Jennings Bryan ran for president. After the ballots were counted, Bryan lost the election to McKinley, Altgeld lost the governorship and Darrow lost his race.
